MIPTV/50 years old, looking to the future

The fiftieth edition of Miptv will open with the screening of the first episode of “Da Vinci’s Demons” on April 8th, followed by a conversation with the showrunner David S. Goyer, and the stars, Tom Riley and Laura Haddock. The celebrations for the half century of the Cannes international entertainment market will then continue at the Hotel Martinez, with a cocktail party.
Amongst the special events being held to mark this anniversary, we should mention the United Nations and GlobalEducation First initiative (April 10th at the Grand Auditorium), with which Miptv intends to highlight the social role of television and its commitment to promoting a movement aimed at providing education for the 60 million children in the world who do not go to school. Speakers will include Gordon Brown, the Special United Nations Envoy for Global Education, John Wood, founder of Room to Read and David Zaslav, president and CEO of Discovery Communications.

The schedule of international screenings will include the presentation of the historical series “The Odyssey”, attended by Italian actress Caterina Murino, who plays Penelope. This is a European co-production between Arte – Rai – Rtp (the executive producers are Makingprod and Gmt Studio).

There will be a strong focus on co-productions thanks to the Producers’ Hub, the space dedicated to producers, creatives and publishers with case studies dedicated to “Hemlock Grove”, “Spies of Warsaw”, “Crossing Lines” and a masterclass starring the cast of “Rouge” (including the star of the series, Thandie Newton). This is an EntertainmentOne co-production between the United Kingdom and Canada, which will be presented to the international press at MipTv. Also at the Producers’ Hub, David Goyer will be revealing more behind the scenes information about “Da Vinci’s Demons” in a special masterclass.

As part of Media Mastermind Keynote, Darren Throop, president and CEO of Entertainment One, will discuss the future of the group after the recent acquisition of Alliance Entertainment. Other keynote speakers will be Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff, executive producers of the multi- award-winning “Homeland”, David Zaslav, president and CEO of Discove- ry Communications, Ben Stephenson, Head of Drama Commissioning forthe BBC, Piv Berndt, Head of Drama at the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, Anthony E. Zuiker, creator of “CSI”, and Tim Hincks, president of the Endemol group.
Stephen Lambert, president of newcomer ALL3MEDIA America, and creator of successful formats such as “Wife Swap,” “Secret Millionaire,” and “Undercover Boss,” will be one of the keynote speakers at MipFormats which offers a series of conferences and screenings and a digital library for around 250 buyers, in the two days preceding Miptv.
New for Mipcube, dedicated to innovation and “branded” content, will be the Brands and Content Masterclass, sponsored by Ogilvy & Mather in partnership with Hyper Island, that will present a selection of the most successful campaigns.
Branded Entertainment is finding an increasingly bigger space for itself at Miptv, which will also feature “The Red Bull Stratos Experience,” with the famous Austrian skydiver, Felix Baumgartner, whose free fall from the stratosphere on October 14th 2012 kept around 52 million viewers glued to the YouTube channel which streamed the event live, along with the CEO of Red Bull Media House, Alexander Koppel, responsible for the documentation and multi- platform distribution of the event.
