Two KGB spies in a Washington suburb the day after Reagan was elected president of the United States: these are “The Americans”, the main characters in the series of the same name, the world premiere of the first episode of which will open Mipcom on October 8th. “The Americans” is a Fox Television Studios and FX Productions co-production (international sales: 20th Century Fox Television Distribution).
Many TV series will be presented at the Cannes entertainment market. These include the crime drama, “The Fall”, starring the leading actress from “The X-Files”, Gillian Anderson, the international distribution of which is being handled by Content Media and ZDF Enterprises; “Primeval: New World” and “Saving Hope” from Entertainment One; “Ripper Street”, a costume crime drama starring Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg, produced by Tiger Aspect and Lookout Point and distributed by BBC Worldwide. The BBC will also be bringing the new ‘Italian Style’ cookery series “Nigellissima” to Mipcom, featuring the famous international chef Nigella Lawson.
CBS Studio International will be celebrating ten years of “NCIS” with Michael Weatherly (who has played special agent Anthony DiNozzo since the first series), who will be joined on the red carpet by the creative producer Gary Glasberg. On October 9th Glasberg will hold a master class during which he will discuss the secrets of the success of this TV series which remains at the top of the ratings…even after ten seasons.
The country of honor at the 2012 edition of Mipcom is Canada. It has already been announced that Pierre Karl Péladeau, President and CEO of Québecor Inc., Quebecor Media Inc. and Sun Media Corporation, and Wade Oosterman, who heads Bell Canada, the country’s biggest telecommunications company, will be attending the event. The focus on Canada, organized by Mipcom in partnership with Telefilm Canada and the Canada Media Fund, will include a series of events aimed at boosting Canadian business and creativity on an international level. Canada is already famous for the high level of its TV series, animations, documentaries and cutting edge digital and experimental media. Amongst the various initiatives there will be a matchmaking session dedicated to international co-productions, another important sector for the Canadians.
With regard to Italy, this edition of Mipcom marks the return of the ICE which will be organizing the ITALIA stand together with the APT, in its new guise as the Agency for the Foreign Promotion and Internationalization of Italian Businesses. The stand will once again be located inside the Riviera Pavilion: an “umbrella” area with tables that smaller companies can take turns to use for their meetings plus 8 small individual stands.
14 companies will be using the “umbrella” formula, including two Film Commissions (Apulia Film Commission and Italian Riviera Alpi del Mare Film Commission).
Intramovies will be attending the Cannes Market with a list of titles that includes the latest Russian production (14 titles from the Roskino catalogue) and the Argentinian comedy “El Dedo” by Sergio Teubal. The Italian titles include: “Love is in the Air” by Fausto Brizzi and “A Flat for three” by Carlo Verdone.
