CAMPANIA/At work for Elena Ferrante

Filming is currently in progress in Caserta on “My Brilliant Friend”, the eight episode TV series directed by Saverio Costanzo based on the bestsellers by Elena Ferrante.
The impressive work of reconstructing the Rione Luzzatti quarter saw the involvement of a technical crew of 150 people which managed to create 20,000 square meters in over 100 days of work, constructing 14 small buildings, 5 indoor sets, a church and a tunnel.
The work carried out by the set design department under the guidance of Giancarlo Basili, in collaboration with the Neapolitan interior designer Elio Maiello, was invaluable. e series also features 1500 costumes consisting of original and archive garments as well as over 150 actors and 5000 extras revolving around the two protagonists, Elena and Lila, who are played, as children, by Elisa Del Genio and Ludovica Nasti (first screen appearance), and as teenagers by Margherita Mazzucco and Gaia Girace.

The series was also filmed in Naples, with the collaboration of the Film Commission Regione Campania: in the Galleria Principe, where all the venues facing onto the interior of the Galleria were furnished in the style of 1950s stores, in Piazza del Plebiscito which, for two days, was “invaded” by period vehicles for the setting of the high school attended by Elena and Lila, for which Palazzo Gravina was used, the head office of the department of Architecture of the University Federico II.
Other filming in real locations is planned at the Molo San Vincenzo and the ancient Molo Borbonico in the area of the Port of Naples where, using a ferry from the period, the departure of the two protagonists for Ischia will be staged. Some scenes will also be filmed in Ischia: the arrival of the ferry as well as the girls’ stay.

“My Brilliant Friend” is a HBO-RAI Fiction and TimVision series produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani for Wildside and by Domenico Procacci for Fandango in co-production with Umedia Production (the executive producer is Jennifer Schuur).
The story-line and screenplays are by Elena Ferrante, Francesco Piccolo, Laura Paolucci and Saverio Costanzo. FremantleMedia International is the international distributor.
